Why we run a reviewer program
Home improvement content is high-stakes. A wrong instruction on a running-toilet fix wastes 30 minutes. A wrong instruction on an electrical panel fix can kill someone. We take that difference seriously.
The contractor review program exists to make sure our highest-risk content is technically correct — not just editorially clean. Our editors know how to structure a fix guide. Our reviewers know what happens when you skip a step. Both perspectives make the page.
Reviewer sign-off is required for 100% of pages in these categories:
- Electrical — outlets, switches, fixtures, panels, wiring, service entrance
- Gas-related — gas water heaters, gas ranges, gas furnaces, gas leak protocols, gas line topics
- Structural — foundation cracks, load-bearing walls, framing, roof structure
- Roofing — any DIY-adjacent roof work, especially on multi-story homes
- HVAC gas-appliance work — furnace repair, heat exchanger topics, gas venting
- Emergency protocols — gas leak, CO alarm, electrical fire, burst pipe, sewer backup
Reviewer roster
Our contract reviewer network is actively being built out. As we sign each reviewer, their bio, credentials, and review scope are published here. All reviewers hold current active licenses in their state of practice and provide license numbers to our editorial team for verification.
Currently onboarding:
Licensed Electrician (Contract)
Status: Reviewer contract in negotiation
Scope: All electrical DIY pages, panel-adjacent content, generator transfer switch topics, EV charger install content, service entrance topics.
Preferred licensing: Master Electrician, TX or CA, 10+ years experience.
Licensed Plumber (Contract)
Status: Reviewer contract in negotiation
Scope: High-traffic plumbing pages, gas-adjacent water heater content, sewer line topics, backflow and cross-connection topics.
Preferred licensing: Journeyman or Master Plumber, any US state, 10+ years experience.
General Contractor (Contract)
Status: Reviewer contract in negotiation
Scope: Structural pages, foundation topics, framing, load-bearing wall content, roofing DIY content, multi-story roof safety.
Preferred licensing: Licensed GC, any US state, 15+ years experience.
HVAC Technician (Contract)
Status: Reviewer contract in negotiation
Scope: Gas furnace pages, heat exchanger content, refrigerant topics, ductwork sizing, CO safety, gas venting.
Preferred licensing: NATE-certified, EPA 608 certified, any US state.
Note on transparency: Home Fix Reference launched in August 2026. This page will be updated with named reviewers as contracts are signed. Until then, high-risk pages are held from publication until reviewer signoff is available — we don't publish uncredited high-risk content just to fill the site.
Review workflow
Each reviewer works on a batched weekly cycle. The editor sends a PDF batch of pages needing review. The reviewer responds within 48 hours with either signoff, markup, or a request for revision. Once revisions are applied, the reviewer signs off in writing and the page publishes with credit.
Reviewers can also flag pages for takedown or rewrite if they identify a safety issue that our editorial process missed. This has priority over the publication schedule.
Compensation and independence
Reviewers are paid a flat fee per reviewed page — currently $100–$300 depending on page complexity and reviewer specialty. Reviewers are not compensated based on affiliate revenue, ad revenue, or product recommendations that appear on the pages they review. Reviewer compensation is a fixed editorial expense.
Reviewers do not have editorial control over the site. They review content for technical accuracy and safety. Editorial structure, tone, monetization, and cross-linking are Home Fix Reference decisions.
If a reviewer declines to sign off on a page, the page is either rewritten or held from publication. We do not publish over a reviewer's declined signoff.
Apply to review
We're actively expanding our reviewer network. If you are a currently licensed electrician, plumber, general contractor, or HVAC technician in the US and interested in reviewing content for Home Fix Reference on a contract basis, contact reviewers@homefixreference.com with your license state, license number, area of specialty, and years of experience.
We especially welcome reviewers who focus on: aluminum wiring safety, older-home electrical (knob-and-tube, cloth-covered), gas leak protocols, structural crack diagnosis, and asbestos or lead paint identification.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. Reviewer credit is only granted for pages the reviewer read line-by-line and signed off on in writing. Editorial edits to a signed-off page that touch the reviewed sections require re-notification of the reviewer.
The reviewer's technical assessment wins. If our editor believes the reviewer is wrong on a safety-relevant point, the page is held from publication and escalated to a second reviewer for a second opinion. We don't override reviewer sign-off with editorial preference.
Yes. Every named reviewer's license state and license number is available on request via editorial@homefixreference.com for verification purposes. Most states offer public license lookup portals.
