Topics we intentionally do not teach as DIY
Some home projects are dangerous enough that we do not publish DIY instructions for them, regardless of demand. On the following topics, our content is limited to warning signs, emergency shutoff procedures, and how to find and hire a licensed professional:
- Gas line work of any kind — only shut-off procedures and evacuation protocols are covered; the rest requires a licensed plumber or gas fitter.
- Live electrical panel work — breaker replacement, panel upgrades, service entrance work, sub-panel installation, generator transfer switch installation, and EV charger installation are all licensed electrician territory.
- Structural modifications — removing or altering load-bearing walls, foundation repair beyond hairline crack sealing, and any framing changes that affect load paths.
- Multi-story roof work — beyond straightforward tasks like gutter cleaning or minor flashing repair at low pitch, roof work carries fall risk we won't ask readers to accept.
- Asbestos identification and removal — always hire an asbestos remediation contractor. We provide identification guidance to know when to stop, not how to remove it yourself.
- Lead paint remediation — same as asbestos. RRP-certified contractors only.
- Large-scale mold remediation — small contained spots are DIY; anything beyond 10 sq ft or involving HVAC is a remediation-contractor job.

Building codes vary by state, city, and county. Many home improvements require permits, and the wrong work can affect insurance and resale value.
Before starting any project that touches a home system — plumbing, electrical, HVAC, structural, or exterior — check your local codes and permit requirements. Contact your local building department. Even work that is DIY-legal in one jurisdiction may require a licensed contractor pull the permit in another.

In an emergency
If you smell rotten eggs (natural gas), leave the house immediately. Do not use light switches, phones, or anything electrical inside. Once outside and clear, call your gas utility's emergency line, not the fire department first — the utility line is faster.
If a carbon monoxide (CO) detector is alarming, evacuate immediately. Do not investigate. Call 911 from outside. CO is invisible and odorless; a chirping alarm means dangerous levels are present, not that the alarm is faulty.
If a burst pipe is actively flooding, shut off the main water valve first, then the power to affected circuits. Standing water plus live electricity is deadly. If you can't safely reach either shutoff, evacuate and call 911.
